Oana-Mihaela Mocanu is the director general of the European Institute of Romania starting with April 23, 2020. Between July 30, 2019 and April 22, 2020 she was interim director general of the EIR. Alumna of the Faculty of International Business and Economics, Bucharest University of Economic Studies, she has a PhD in Economics, with a specialization in international business and economics; in 2010 she defended her doctoral thesis on European Neighbourhood Policy. The three-month postgraduate courses on Contemporary European Studies, that she attended at the University of Birmingham – the European Research Institute, contributed to extending her knowledge in the field of European policies and institutions. She also took part in a series of workshops and EU research courses in Florence, Maastricht, Brussels. She is also a member of the Chevening Scholars Association – British Council, and a Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar, Austria.

She started her activity at the European Institute of Romania in the year 2000. She was an expert/project coordinator at the European Studies and Analysis Department, and then coordinated the activity of the Studies and Analyses Unit, being in charge of the Institute’s research projects and main publications. Between October 2002 and January 2022, she was the editor-in-chief of the academic Romanian Journal of European Affairs, and currently she is the director of the publication. In addition, between September 2011 and July 2019, she coordinated the EIR Newsletter as chief editor.

She has experience in research (including the activity within the Institute of World Economy of the Romanian Academy in the first years after the faculty’s graduation – 1998-2000), as well as in project management, coordinating over time a number of European affairs research and communication projects.
