Information material – Revitalising a Strategic Partnership: The EU-South Africa Relations

The European Institute of Romania (EIR) has published the information material “Revitalising a Strategic Partnership: The EU–South Africa Relations”, authored by Ioana-Elena Bădescu-Secu, expert within the Studies Unit, EIR. The paper analyses the EU–South Africa relations in view of the March 2025 Cape Town Summit, when an EU €4.7 billion investment package and the Clean Trade and Investment Partnership were announced.

Despite recent challenges in this strategic partnership—such as the tensions occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and, sometimes, differing positions on the war in Ukraine—the analysis shows that the EU–South Africa partnership remains strong, grounded in shared values and mutual interests. Cooperation spans energy, climate, security, and human rights. The paper also highlights Romania’s active role in EU–Africa engagement through its strategy focused on peace, development, and education.
