Editorial release – The Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU: A different perspective on the European priorities

The European Institute of Romania announces the publication of an Opinion titled “The Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU: A Different Perspective on the European Priorities” authored by Ioana Elena Bădescu-Secu and Oana-Mihaela Mocanu. This opinion is a timely contribution as Hungary assumed the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1st, 2024, for the second time. The authors emphasise Hungary’s apparent intention to reshape EU policies in accordance with its different outlook on the pressing challenges faced by Europe: The Russian aggression against Ukraine, the need to bolster competitiveness, EU defence, and the advancement of the European enlargement. The particular approach of the Hungarian Presidency may be influenced by its domestic agenda. Hence, the success of the Presidency will be determined by its capacity to align with the European values and foster policies aimed at ensuring stability.
