Editorial release: “The European Union’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean countries in the current geopolitical context”

The European Institute of Romania has published the Working Paper No. 53, authored by Ioana-Elena Bădescu-Secu (expert within the Studies Unit / European Affairs Department of the EIR), and titled “The European Union’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean countries in the current geopolitical context”. The paper analyses the evolving relationship between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), emphasizing the impact of recent geopolitical changes, particularly that of the war of aggression against Ukraine. Thus, the study explores key areas for the two regions such as: economic cooperation, political dialogue, trade agreements, and security collaborations.

Among the major themes discussed are: the role of the EU-MERCOSUR trade agreement; the EU’s initiatives like Global Gateway and “The New Agenda for Relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean” and their impact on the development in LAC; the geopolitical dynamics, including the influence of Russia and China on Latin America; the economic and political consequences of the conflict in Ukraine on the EU-LAC relations; the challenges and opportunities for deepening cooperation between the two regions.
