The European Policy Institutes Network (EPIN) has recently analysed 19 succinct national perspectives on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on EU democracies. The results have been included in a thematic report which explores the effects of different crisis rules or procedures on the democratic character of national governance.
The European Institute of Romania, which is part of the EPIN network, has been represented by Eliza Vaș and Bogdan Mureșan, researchers within the European Studies Unit. Their analysis shows that the pandemic has exposed some sensitive issues related to Romanian democracy, but opinions are divided about how different government decisions may have affected it. While parliamentary control over executive action has not been hampered, the ongoing state of alert is still causing public discontent and political friction between the government and the parliamentary opposition.
